New York, As It Happened

New York is loud. Fast. Crowded. Constantly moving.

But somewhere between the trains arriving, people crossing streets, storefronts opening and another day happening, there are these tiny moments where everything seems to slow down.

Someone waiting for the train. A man working above a sidewalk while hundreds of people pass beneath him. A woman sitting outside a laundromat. A conversation on a corner. Someone feeding pigeons. Someone simply watching the city move around them.

Nothing extraordinary happened in front of us.

And maybe that’s exactly why I kept raising my camera.

I wasn’t looking for New York landmarks or trying to make the city look like anything other than what it was. I just wanted to notice the people inside of it—the routines, the colors, the quiet, the strange little intersections of lives that existed for a few seconds before everyone kept moving.

Most of these people will never know I photographed them. I’ll never know where they were headed, what they were thinking about, or what happened five minutes later.

For one frame, though, our lives crossed.
