Lines repeated. Notes given. Scenes pulled apart and put back together again. The same moment tried one more time—not because it was wrong, but because it could be better. This is the part most people never see. The work before the applause. The quiet focus. The awkward attempts, the breakthroughs, and the trust it takes to create something alongside other people. For three weeks, students at the UNCSA Summer Drama Intensive stepped into the work.And somewhere between the rehearsals, the long days, and the constant willingness to try again, something began to take shape.

Robert Dance has been painting for most of his life. It began with a watercolor of an iris when he was a child in Japan. One painting. One small beginning that, at the time, couldn’t possibly explain the decades of work that would follow. More than sixty years later, Robert is still creating.
Robert is also Stuart’s dad. Which means this story is a little closer to home for us. We’ve had the chance to know the person behind the paintings—to see the work, the years, and the life that exists beyond the finished piece hanging on a wall.
His work is precise, but the way he sees goes beyond the obvious. Water becomes movement. Light becomes color. A familiar stretch of coastline becomes something worth stopping for. His paintings ask you to look a little longer at the things most of us move past. There is something quietly powerful about spending time with someone who has devoted a lifetime to his craft. Not because every step was part of some perfectly mapped-out plan, but because he kept returning to the work.
One painting became another.
One year became decades.
Small steps create big shifts.
And sometimes, when you keep showing up long enough, those small steps become a life’s work.

It grows when we choose to try, even when we’re unsure of the outcome. Every time you take action despite self-doubt, you reinforce the belief that you’re capable. Confidence isn’t about having all the answers — it’s about trusting that you can figure it out along the way.
The key to making things happen isn’t waiting for the perfect moment; it’s starting with what you have, where you are. Big goals can feel overwhelming when viewed all at once, but momentum builds through small, consistent action. Whether you’re working toward a personal milestone or a professional dream, progress comes from showing up — not perfectly, but persistently. Action creates clarity, and over time, those steps forward add up to something real.
